Input lag depends on connection type, DS4Windows settings, and system setup. For competitive gaming, use USB and tune poll rate and output data.

USB vs Bluetooth

USB usually gives the lowest latency (around 1–2 ms). Bluetooth adds a few milliseconds (often 5–10 ms or more). For competitive play, prefer USB. For casual play, Bluetooth is fine.

  • Use a USB cable that supports data (not charge-only).
  • If using Bluetooth, use a Bluetooth 4.0+ adapter and keep the controller close with minimal obstacles.

Poll Rate (Max Poll Rate)

In your profile: Edit Profile → Other. Set Max Poll Rate to 1 ms for the fastest response. Higher values (e.g. 2 ms, 4 ms) increase latency slightly but can reduce CPU use.

Enable Output Data to DS4

If you don’t need rumble or light bar control from the game, disable Enable Output Data to DS4 in the profile (Edit Profile → Other). That can reduce latency by 1–2 ms.

System Tweaks

  • Set Windows power plan to High Performance.
  • In Device Manager, disable power saving for the Bluetooth adapter (if using Bluetooth).
  • Close background apps that might cause stutter or input delay.
  • Run DS4Windows as Administrator for more consistent timing.
  • Disable Windows Game Bar controller support if you don’t use it.

Summary

For lowest lag: use USB, set Max Poll Rate to 1 ms, disable “Enable Output Data to DS4” if you don’t need rumble/lightbar, use High Performance power plan, and close unnecessary apps. See Bluetooth Setup for wireless tuning.
